USAGE:
(1.) В просьбах и повелениях с глаголом to wait следующий за ним инфинитив присоединяется союзом and: Let's wait and see. /Wait and see. Подождем - увидим. /Не торопись, подожди. Wait and try again. Подожди и еще раз попробуй. В этой же конструкции в повелительном наклонении употребляются глаголы to go, to come, to try: come and see us приходите к нам (повидаться); go and buy some bread пойди, купи хлеба. (2.) Русские ждать где-либо или ждать сколько-нибудь времени соответствуют глаголу to wait обычно в беспредложной конструкции: wait here подождите здесь; wait a minute подождите минутку; wait until he comes подождите пока он придет; He has been waiting years until it happened. Он ждал долгие годы, пока это не произошло. Русское "ждать своей очереди" соответствует английскому словосочетанию wait one's turn. (3.) Выражение can't wait to do smth обозначает не терпиться (в ожидании какого-либо действия): I can't wait to meet your friends. Мне не терпится познакомиться с твоими друзьями. (4.) Русские ждать, надеяться на что-либо соответствуют английским сочетаниям to look forward to smth, to doing smth: We are looking forward to this trip. Мы очень ждем этой поездки. He is looking forward to your coming. Он с нетерпением ждет вашего приезда. (5.) For wait USAGE (1.); See infinitive; USAGE (6.). CHOICE OE WORDS: See expect, v; CHOICE OF WORDS (1.), (2.).
